Same constraint, same solution.

Each environment selects a small set of viable forms. Anyone who arrives is shaped into one of them. The list under each environment is what got shaped, and how.

01

Deep ocean (cold, dark, high-pressure)

Almost no light. Sparse, unpredictable food. Crushing pressure. The body must locate food with non-visual cues, conserve energy, and not collapse.

trait
Bioluminescence
independent in

Anglerfish · firefly squid · lanternfish · ostracods (independently)

trait
Outsized mouth + collapsible gut
independent in

Gulper eel · viperfish · dragonfish (multiple)

trait
Slow metabolism, long lifespan
independent in

Greenland shark · orange roughy · giant tube worms

trait
Loss of pigment & eyes
independent in

Many cave-fish parallel; some hadal isopods

02

Hot desert (water-scarce, high UV, hot/cold cycles)

Lose water and you die. Get too hot in the day, too cold at night. Food and shade are spotty. The body must hoard water, dump heat, and time activity.

trait
Succulent water-storing tissue
independent in

American cacti · African euphorbias (independent of cacti)

trait
Nocturnal foraging
independent in

Kangaroo rats · jerboas · gerbils · fennec foxes

trait
Concentrated urine / dry feces
independent in

Multiple desert mammals; many reptiles

trait
Light reflective surfaces
independent in

Saharan silver ants (cuticular hairs) · pale desert reptiles

03

Polar / extreme cold

Lose heat slower than you generate it, or die. Liquid water is rare. Food is sparse for half the year. The body must insulate, antifreeze, and hibernate.

trait
Antifreeze proteins in blood
independent in

Antarctic icefish (Notothenioidei) · Arctic cod (independently)

trait
Counter-current limb circulation
independent in

Penguins · whales · seals · arctic mammals (multiple)

trait
Layered insulation (fat, fur, feathers)
independent in

Polar bear · seal · penguin · musk ox

trait
White cryptic coloration
independent in

Arctic fox · ermine · ptarmigan · snowshoe hare

04

Dark cave systems

No light. Stable temperature. Sparse food. Selection switches off the visual system and amplifies non-visual senses.

trait
Loss of eyes & pigment
independent in

Mexican cavefish · olm · cave crayfish · cave isopods (many independent origins)

trait
Elongated tactile appendages
independent in

Cave crickets · whip spiders · cave fish barbels

trait
Reduced metabolism
independent in

Olm · most cave-adapted fish

trait
Echolocation (in those that came in late)
independent in

Oilbird · cave swiftlets · some bats

05

High altitude

Less oxygen per breath. More UV. Cold. The body must extract more O₂ per breath and tolerate hypoxia.

trait
Modified hemoglobin with higher O₂ affinity
independent in

Andean condor · bar-headed goose · Tibetan humans · Ethiopian highlanders (independent)

trait
Larger lungs / higher capillary density
independent in

Llama · vicuña · yak · highland deer mice

trait
Thicker fur and dark UV pigmentation
independent in

Snow leopard · Himalayan tahr · Andean rodents

06

Parasitic life

The host gives you everything. So selection strips away anything you don't need: legs, eyes, gut, brain. The shape collapses toward the simplest form that can find a host and reproduce.

trait
Loss of locomotion, sense organs, digestive system
independent in

Tapeworms · barnacle parasites of crabs (Sacculina) · root parasitic plants

trait
Anchoring hooks / suckers
independent in

Tapeworms · flukes · lamprey · leech

trait
Massive fecundity (millions of eggs)
independent in

Helminths broadly; Sacculina; brood parasitic birds

trait
Manipulation of host behaviour
independent in

Toxoplasma · cordyceps fungi · parasitoid wasps · hairworms

07

Fast aerial pursuit

Catch a moving target in three-dimensional air. The body must produce thrust, lift, and instant control corrections, all at the same time, against drag.

trait
Pointed elongated wing for high-speed glide
independent in

Falcons · swifts · dragonflies · pterosaurs

trait
High visual acuity / fovea
independent in

Birds of prey · dragonflies (compound-eye equivalent)

trait
Instinctive interception trajectory (constant bearing)
independent in

Dragonflies · falcons · bats hunting moths
