What we built. What evolution already had.

When humans solve a problem with technology, the solution often turns out to have been pre-discovered by selection — millions of years earlier, in another medium. The pairs below are not metaphors. They share underlying invariants.

01
The invariant

Form a focused image of a scene by bending light through a graded medium onto a sensor.

Biological

Camera-type eye

Lens of variable refractive index. Iris regulates light entry. Retina sensor. Evolved 8+ times independently.

Engineered

Photographic camera

Glass lens, mechanical iris (aperture), CCD/CMOS sensor. Same architecture, different medium.

02
The invariant

Map the surrounding environment in the absence of light by emitting a pulse and timing its echo.

Biological

Echolocation

Bats emit ultrasonic chirps; whales emit clicks through a fatty melon; brain back-computes distance and shape.

Engineered

Sonar / radar

Ping out, receive echo, compute range and bearing. Discovered independently of any biology lecture in the 1900s.

03
The invariant

A unit that integrates many weighted inputs and decides whether to fire a signal forward.

Biological

Biological neuron

Dendrites collect weighted synaptic inputs. Soma sums them. Above threshold, the axon fires.

Engineered

Artificial neuron

Inputs ×ᵢ, weights wᵢ, sum, nonlinearity (ReLU/sigmoid), output. Designed in the 1940s without trying to copy biology.

04
The invariant

Distinguish self from non-self at a population level. Eliminate the non-self, remember it.

Biological

Adaptive immune system

Antibodies recognize foreign patterns. Memory cells persist after the first encounter. False-positive autoimmunity is the cost.

Engineered

Cybersecurity / intrusion detection

Signature databases of known threats. Anomaly detection on traffic. Persistent logs as 'memory'. The same architecture in another medium.

05
The invariant

Many simple agents, no central plan, produce coherent group behaviour through local rules.

Biological

Swarm / colony intelligence

Ant colonies route food via pheromone reinforcement. Bee swarms decide on a new nest by quorum.

Engineered

Swarm robotics / distributed systems

Many simple bots, local communication only. Consensus protocols (Raft, Paxos) re-invented quorum sensing in code.

06
The invariant

Cultivate a productive species rather than hunt it. Stabilize calorie supply.

Biological

Non-human agriculture

Leaf-cutter ants farm fungi (~60 MYA). Termites do too, independently. Damselfish farm algae lawns.

Engineered

Human agriculture

Domesticated wheat, rice, maize. Independently invented in 7+ regions by 12,000 years ago. Latecomer to the strategy.

07
The invariant

A self-replicating instruction set encoded in a linear sequence, executed by a universal interpreter.

Biological

DNA / ribosome

Four-letter sequence; ribosome reads triplets and assembles polymers. Single origin, copied across all life.

Engineered

Source code / interpreter

Symbol sequence; interpreter reads tokens and produces behaviour. Designed without biological inspiration. Same invariant.

08
The invariant

A shared belief, ritual, and identity binds large groups of unrelated individuals into cooperation.

Biological

Religion (across human cultures)

Independently arose in every continent, every era. Common features: founding narrative, ritual practice, in/out group identity.

Engineered

Modern brand & ideology

Founding myth (the founders), ritual practice (annual keynote), in-group identity (Apple users vs. PC users). The same software runs on different hardware.
